A native of Louisville, W. Kent Taylor lived and worked in Colorado for a while, taking jobs at nightclubs and restaurants with dreams of attending culinary school. In 1990, Taylor went back home and took a job with Kentucky Fried Chicken working as a manager but all the time, thinking about starting a restaurant that served food Colorado style. His dream finally came true in February 1993 when he first started the Buckhead Hickory Grill with an initial capital of $80,000 that he received from former Kentucky Governor John Y. Brown, Jr. The location was the Green Tree Mall in Clarksville, Indiana that was sited across the Ohio River from Louisville. After a time the restaurant chain would come to be known as Buckhead Mountain Grill with Taylor leading as the executive chef. John Y. Brown continued to add funds to the venture and would have liked to start another restaurant in Clarksville had the partnership not ended. Taylor was able to bring in new partners like Scott Canfield but was also pressured into changing the restaurant's name to Texas Roadhouse. Finally, Taylor opted out of the Buckhead restaurant by selling out his stake but the chain continued to expand. Gainesville Florida was the location of a second restaurant and by the end of the century, there were 67 Texas Roadhouses. The company went public in 2004. Another interesting factoid. In July 2014, they had a burger eating contest that was won by Brian Gibson. By downing 29 burgers in 16 minutes, 28 seconds, Gibson became the star of the show.
